My Fabric subscription box from Sew Hayley Jane- What a fab idea!
Late last year, I heard about a new company called Sew Hayley Jane a fabric subscription service which made me curious! Whilst I have heard of this kind of box for crafting/quilting, I hadn’t come across one for dressmaking. After getting in touch with Hayley, she sent me a classic box in March to review.
I wanted to review my box after I had made something up. It’s taken me a bit of time, but here’s a shot of the top I made using the gorgeous drapey viscose in my box!
So what’s the idea behind it?
I’m going to quote Hayley here:
“Ever find yourself in a fabric shop full of so many gorgeous lengths of cotton, jersey, denim, linen and so much more that you don’t even know where to begin? Well, each month I will send you a box of beautifully curated fabric and haberdashery items, everything you need to create stunning homemade creations, from dresses and tops, to quilts, cushions and other homewares”
Personally I generally head to the block colours and plain fabrics when in a store as I’m a little “Phobic” about prints! I definitely have a comfort zone, and as I’m often time poor when shopping I usually buy what I know. The beauty of receiving a surprise subscription box, is that you can try new things that you may not have thought about using before. My Classic box included a lovely viscose that is so light and drapey and feels amazing next to the skin. I wouldn’t have headed towards this in a shop, but I love my finished top, and the colours really suit my skin and hair.
Here’s the low down on how it works!
So, here’s the skinny on how this type of subscription works. You can choose from 3 sizes of fabric boxes.
- Mini : Great for crafters or for quick dressmaking projects
- Classic : Good for beginner dressmakers looking for a new project, or dressmakers like me who have loads of patterns and are looking for some fresh inspiration!
- Luxury: Perfect as a special gift for yourself, and great if you find not only fabric choices baffling, but don’t know how to pair patterns and fabrics together.
You can also see previous boxes to get an idea of what will be included. Here’s some shots of mine, as it arrived and as I eagerly unpacked!
Aside from the convenience of having a carefully curated fabric box arriving on your doorstep, there are no long term commitments. You don’t need to sign up for a fixed period, so you can change your box size, or pause a month or so when you need to without any financial penalties.
I have to say that I love love love receiving packages in the post, It’s like getting a present. And this one comes packaged like a present too! I love tissue wrapped fabrics. Inside my box was a dressmaking length( I still have enough for a dress!) a co-ordinating invisible zip, matching thread, a set of pretty covered buttons, 4 fat quarters, hooks and eyes and a herbal teabag! Hayley adds a hand written note with the boxes, making it feel very special.
I’ve used half of 2 of the fat quarter pieces to make a quick little zip bag, and have some plans for the rest of the fat quarters too.
So if like me, you’re time poor and love surprises then the Sew Hayley Jane Fabric subscription box could be just what you need!
PS: my top is perfect for summer as it’s so light and soft. It’s already had a couple of wears!
NB: I was sent this fabric box to review, however all the opinions in this post are genuinely my own. I only choose to publish reviews of any products if I genuinely think they are great!
